Exporting Gmail Contacts to Evolution
Gmail has been widely used nowadays and for most of us, it seems indispensable. However, for others who would prefer to use a traditional mail client over a web-based mail client the following steps might be helpful.
As always the case, I am using Linux for my daily work routines. And I have the option of using either Mozilla Thunderbird or Evolution as my mail client. Whichever client I use, I am still assured I will get my mail in time.
If you are on Gmail, I’m pretty sure you would want to export your Contacts list over to your mail client. Here are the details how to do it.
- Click on Gmail’s “Contacts” link at the left.
- Click on “All Contacts”
- Scroll down the page, then click on “Select: All”
- Scroll up, then on the top most right corner of the Gmail page, there’s Import and Export. Click on Export.
- In the dialog box, you will get to choose either export as Gmail CSV or Outlook CSV.
To import the saved Outlook CSV contacts file:
- open up Evolution
- click on File, Import
- choose “Import a Single File”
- click on “Browse” and select the CSV file exported from Gmail.
- continue with the process then click Finish.

The importing does not match up the fields for some reason

They are right; doesn’t really work… Info gets screwed up… you should at least check a tip before you post it…

No, that does not work. Evolution does not split name and email address into two fields.

Doesn’t work. Already tried.
I guess it should be done the Linux way -> sed + grep

After some playing around, I found the proper order for at least the first and last name, nickname, and email:
firstname, lastname, nickname, emailAny more than that you will have to continue doing what I did:
Open the csv with OOO Calc and move the columns around. After each import, you can click on the contact to see where the data went, this should tell you the order of the columns according to how evolution sees it.

Maybe this is something new with gmail but I found the option “export to vCard” and it worked out perfectly (at least, as far as I could tell). Much better than jumping through hopes converting from one CSV format to another.

I tried exporting to vCard format, and that worked perfectly. The gmail and outlook CSV format options didn’t work at all.

Fine. The tips does not work properly. Info comes screwed into Evolution.
The 2nd way (export as vCard) worked BETTER, but I’m Brazilian and I use ç and ã. This kind of char comes screwed up even with export as vCard.
